Ever since I moved to Cumbria from London I wanted to be part of the environment and its wildlife. Although I worked at the Wild Life SOS Centre http://www.wildlifeaid.org.uk/ whilst living in London, I’d never seen a our native Red Squirrel. Only after moving to Cumbria did I learn that they are listed as an endangered species. I am lucky to leave in area where there is a local team doing all they can to help Red Squirrels survive in the area. That group is The Penrith & Districts Red Squirrel Group (PDRSG) https://www.penrithredsquirrels.org.uk/
I have been a volunteer and supporter of the PDRSG for the last 10 years. I try to raise funds and make the public aware of the plight of our native squirrel.
PDRSG were founded in 1994 by local people concerned that they would lose their red squirrels if something was not done about grey squirrels encroaching and becoming established as they had in the rest of England. The group became a registered charity in 2006 and has dedicated ‘Red Squirrel Rangers’.
Through the groups’ consistent squirrel management programmes, the much-loved iconic red squirrels can survive and thrive into the future. However, overcoming many of the challenges the grey squirrels bring is no mean feat. In order to help and support the group, I regularly paint Red Squirrels for sale. All the proceeds of these sales go to the PDRSG. If you would like to support the group please go to their website and become a member: https://www.penrithredsquirrels.org.uk/become-a-member/
